Bowdoin hurler bogs down Mammoths' bats, 4-2, in NESCAC Quarterfinal

AMHERST, Mass. -- Bowdoin junior hurler Jason Bogdanos threw a 9-inning complete game Friday, allowing 11 hits while throwing 119 pitches but walking away with a 4-2 win over the Amherst College baseball team in the opener of a best-of-three NESCAC quarterfinal series played at Memorial Field.

* The two teams will decide their conference quarterfinal series back on Memorial Field Saturday. The first game begins at 12 p.m.. If there is a need for a third game, it will start 30 minutes after the first game Saturday ends. 

* Amherst fell to 23-9 with the loss while the Polar Bears improved to 18-15 on the season. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst took a 1-0 lead off Bogdanos in the bottom of the first. Lead-off hitter Jack Boyle was grazed by a pitch and took first. He moved to second on an error and to third on a fly ball to center. Senior Jack Dove came through by lacing a two-out, RBI-single to right-center field for the lead. 

* Bowdoin tied the game in the top of the second when Claude Brito-Trinidad ripped a two-out, RBI-double down the left-field line. 

* In the Amherst half of the second, Tyler McCord and Boyle ripped back-to-back two-out singles with runners on the corners. Boyle took off for second on the first pitch to Jack McDermott, but the Polar Bears sniffed out the play, with the catcher throwing to the shortstop as McCord took off fo home. The return throw to the plate was in time to nail McCord for the final out of the inning. 

* Bowdoin took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth on Liam Foley's two-out, RBI-single. In the top of the sixth they made it 3-1 when Kevin Murray launched a home run to left field. 

* The Mammoths trailed 4-1 going into the bottom of the eighth when Boyle and McDermot lined hard singles to left-center field back-to-back. After an out, Boyle stole third. With two outs and runners on the corners, McDermott attempted to steal second and was thrown out to end the frame. 

* The Mammoths would not go quietly in the bottom of the ninth. Down to their last strike, Charlie LaFreniere kept the hope alive with a single and Christian Fagnant followed with a single up the middle. McCord lined a single to left-center that scored LaFreniere to make it 4-2, but Bogdanos retired the next batter on a rounder to short to end the contest. 

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst outhit the Polar Bears, 11-7. Boyle and LaFreniere were 2 for 4 with a run scored. McCord was 2 for 4 with an RBI. 

* Amherst sophomore Tristan Kim took the loss but threw well, going six frames and allowing five hits and three runs, two earned. He walked two and fanned one batter.
