WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The #11-ranked Amherst College field hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to archrival #5 Williams at the Ephs' Williamson Field Saturday, dropping its first contest of the season.
Amherst is now 3-1 overall while Williams improved to 5-0. The Mammoths host Western New England University Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths out shot Williams 4-3 over the first 30 minutes, although neither team had a shot on goal as both defenses marked carefully in the circle. The Ephs did create two penalty corner opportunities, one just over 3:30 into the contest that was directed over Mammoth goaltender Grace Pulchalski and the goal. Amherst senior
Sam Maynard had a chance inside the circle but her shot went wide.
* With 11:06 left in the third quarter, Williams' Laura Ryan rocketed a shot off a penalty corner that went in the goal, but was discounted by the officials as a no goal.
* Amherst's first penalty corner came with 7:34 remaining in the third quarter after a tie up in the left corner of the Williams circle, but no shot was taken.
* Minutes later, Maynard's great stick handling created a second penalty corner chance for the Mammoths.
Abbey Kays shot was blocked, but created a second consecutive and third. Then a fourth and a fifth as the Mammoths increased the pressure on the Wiliams' defense. Shots by Kays and
Anna Aiello were stopped by Ellie Smith.
* With 3:50 to go in the third, a hard pass into the circle was deflected y Aiello toward the lower left-hand corner on the short side that was saved.
* Williams absorbed the pressure and then scored the first goal of the game with 3:10 remaining in the third quarter when Claire Colvin poked home a rebound shot.
* With 12:06 left in the game, Aiello created a penalty corner opportunity for the Mammoths, but
Kate Smith's shot was just wide left of the goal.
* Williams had another penalty corner with just under seven minutes to go, but Pulchalski made a nice pad save on a blast by Pilar Torres.
* The Mammoths countered with two penalty corners back to-back, the second with3:56 left in the game. On the first, Kays rocketed a shot in front of the goal that frst-year forward
Caroline Busler got a stick on, but Smith stopped the redirect. On the second,
Justine Liguori's shot was block at the top of the circle.
* With 1:04 remaining, the Williams counter attack produced an insurance goal from Colvin that sealed the outcome.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst out shot Williams 16-12 overall and 5-4 in shots on goal. The Mammoths had nine penalty corners -- all in the second half -- while the Ephs had seven.
* Smith finished with five saves for Williams, Pulchalski three for the Mammoths.
