Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Goals in the first and final quarter send #1 Middlebury past #10 Mammoths, 3-0

AMHERST, Mass.. – The #10-ranked Amherst College field hockey team fell in a 3-0 decision to fellow NESCAC member, #1 Middlebury College on Hill Field this Saturday.  The Mammoths' record now stands at 4-2 this season. 

Next up for the Mammoths is an away game against #13 MIT this Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Goalie Grace Puchalski had an impressive save just minutes into the first quarter when Middlebury's offense ran the ball into the shooting circle and fired a shot on the goal.

* Sam Maynard ran the ball past midfield in the first quarter, setting up Chloe Agopian to fire a bounding ball towards the goal, just missing scoring.

* Middlebury's Defeo worked into the circle and tapped the ball into the goal, shooting from only a few feet away. A few minutes later, Middlebury's Lantzy found an opening in the middle of the attacking circle, scoring a second goal for the Panthers, who led 2-0 after the first quarter.

* Puchalski successfully kicked the ball away from the goal after another shot was fired by Middlebury's offense. The Mammoths' defense followed this by successfully turning away another corner. 

* The Mammoths drew a penalty corner with roughly four minutes remaining in the first. Anna Aiello took a big swing at the ball and fired a shot that was just outside the goal.    

* Amherst had the opportunity to fire just one shot in the second quarter, attempting to score without being awarded any penalty corners. Aiello ran the ball into the circle and took a strong swing at the goal that was blocked by the Panther's goalie. 

* The Mammoths' defense successfully blocked all shots fired by the Panthers in the third quarter. The Mammoths had six saves, the majority of which were earned by Puchalski. Puchalski skillfully defended the goal, laying out to turn away the ball. 

* Middlebury's Stone managed to score following a penalty corner that was awarded to the Panthers in the final quarter.

* Puchalski continued to play an incredible defensive game, saving another shot fired on the goal after a penalty corner was awarded to the Panthers.

* Amherst was awarded their first penalty corner in the second half of the game during the last quarter, setting up Kate Smith to fire a shot at the goal that was blocked by the Panther's defense. 

BY THE NUMBERS: 

* The Mammoths' defense earned 10 saves against the top ranked D3 field hockey team in the nation.

* The Mammoths managed to fire four shots off of only two penalty corners.
