Amherst defeats Westfield State in three-set sweep

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Amherst College volleyball team swept visiting Westfield State 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-18) on Tuesday night while surpassing their win record from the 2023 season. 

Amherst (9-2) will host NESCAC opponent Hamilton College on Friday, September 27 at 7 pm. 

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

* Tied at 7-7 in the first set, a strong seven-point surge with kills from Brielle Renwick and Charlotte Rasmussen and a service ace from Renee Liou pulled the Mammoths ahead 14-7. Amherst continued to push to set point at 24-15 until a seven-point run by Westfield reduced the margin to 24-22. A kill from Rasmussen off of a set from Liou secured the first set for the Mammoths 25-22. 

* In the second set, the Mammoths jumped out to an early 12-5 lead with kills from Renwick, Sofia Camilo, Anaya Thomas, and Rasmussen. Still holding onto the advantage at 16-9, an impressive eight-point rally brought the Mammoths to 24-9. A Westfield kill and service ace disrupted the Amherst streak before a kill from Allie McLaughlin finished the second set 25-11. 

* The Mammoths began the third set with a dominating 11-3 edge with kills from Rasmussen, Thomas, Zosia Teraszkiewicz, and Renwick. The Owls reduced the margin to 12-10 but Amherst's strong offense allowed the Mammoths to maintain their lead. A final kill from Thomas off of a set from Lizzie Papalia secured the set 25-18 and a fifth season sweep. 

BY THE NUMBERS

Brielle Renwick led the Mammoth attack with a career-high 11 kills while Thomas and Rasmussen recorded 10 apiece. 

* Teraszkiewicz registered a match-high 19 digs while Thomas produced 16 and Papalia and Rasmussen finished with 14 each.

* Setter Renee Liou totalled 35 assists on the night.
