Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Amherst caps off successful weekend in Maine with 1-0 win over Colby

WATERVILLE, ME — On Sunday afternoon, the #25 Amherst College men's soccer team played its second away game in Maine of the weekend. On the Mark R. Serdjenian Field, the Mammoths earned their second consecutive 1-0 win versus the Colby College Mules, thanks to senior Wyatt McCarthy's first-half goal.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The Mammoths asserted their dominance from the kick-off, attempting to replicate their start yesterday in which sophomore Riley Priddy put Amherst in the lead after just one minute and 53 seconds. With 3:36 on the clock, sophomore Mohammed Nuhu tested the Mules' goalkeeper, Brendan McCarthy. Seniors Fynn Hayton-Ruffner and Simon Kalinauskus were next to force another save with two headers in the ninth minute. The away side pressured Colby's defense with four corner kicks and seven shots in the first 17 minutes.
  • The inevitable opening goal happened shortly after. Senior Wyatt McCarthy opened his season tally with his first shot of the game. The goal's string of passes began with a cross from Nuhu, followed by a short pass from McCarthy to Hayton-Ruffner in the box. With a quick touch back to McCarthy, the midfielder whipped the ball diagonally into the back of the net.
  • Hayton-Ruffner, aimed to set up senior teammate Niall Murphy with a through ball. His pass then ricocheted off into the path of McCarthy who made no mistake with a devastating shot.
  • In response to the goal and against the run of play, Colby had their first shot of the game, calling Amherst goalkeeper, junior Juan Perez, into action. Aside from the Mules' only effort of the half, the first half resumed much like it started, with Amherst hunting for a second goal. However, the score remained 1-0.
  • The second half was less action-packed than the first, but nonetheless entertaining. Senior Ben Clark-Eden joined the sizeable list of Amherst players having shots, with his flying over the crossbar in the 50th minute, as did senior Jonny Novak's attempt 15 minutes later. Colby had a few promising threads of attacking play, and forced a second crucial save of the game from Perez half-way through the half, but the Mammoths enjoyed most of the possession and looked promising throughout. The score remained 1-0 after ninety minutes giving Amherst their second win in two daysdays.
BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Amherst had 17 shots (7 on goal); Colby had 4 (2 on goal).
  • Amherst had 11 corner kicks; Colby had 4.
QUOTES - Amherst Head Coach, Justin Serpone:
  • "We couldn't be happier getting six points this weekend against two good teams. Nothing comes easy in this league and today's game was another example of that.
  • I have no idea if I've singled out Niall too many times but his pressure today was incredible. I have to give it some thought but I don't think we've ever had a guy who pressed like Niall.  To be able to do that on the second half of a back-to-back is absurd.
  • Colby defended their box incredibly well today and Brendan McCarthy made two amazing saves. Coach Cumpstone has them playing really hard.
  • Look, we've played the hardest schedule in the country and we're 5-1-2. I know everyone had us counted out after we lost to Williams - someone told me we went from ranked #1 to not ranked - but I still think we're a decent team.  I don't know, I guess we'll have to see what happens."
UP NEXT:
  • Amherst now holds a 5-1-2 overall record (3-1-1 versus NESCAC opposition).
  • Up next: the Mammoths will play their third consecutive away game on Wednesday. They will travel to Purchase, NY, to take on the Manhattanville University Valiants at 7pm.
