#2 Amherst kick off new season with 4-0 home win versus Suffolk

AMHERST, MA — The #2 Amherst College men's soccer team commenced its 2024-25 season with a comfortable win versus the Suffolk University Rams under the floodlights on Gooding Field. Amherst beat the Rams with a score of 4-0 on the Mammoths' home turf to the delight of a sizeable showing of supporters.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • It took just eight minutes and 45 seconds for Amherst to break the deadlock and open the scoring. Senior Fynn Hayton-Ruffner put the hosts in the lead. The Californian scored his 14th goal of his career from a corner kick by sophomore Mohammed Nuhu with help from sophomore Riley Priddy.
  • Five minutes later, another Amherst senior doubled Amherst's lead. Curtis, a former NESCAC Player of the Week, converted Mohammed Nuhu's second assist of the game.
  • In the second half, the third goal was a beautiful team goal with slick passing finished by a first-year, Michael Cherico. Upon regaining possession in the middle of the field, the attacking move started with senior Niall Murphy looking ahead with the ball at his feet. With the outside of his foot, Murphy spread the ball to the left wing, where Aidan Curtis carried the ball forward. Curtis then linked back up with Murphy who delivered a chipped cross to Cherico to head home at short range. Cherico's first goal of his Amherst career sealed the victory for Amherst with less than a third of the game remaining until the final whistle.
  • A three-goal lead didn't stop Amherst's attacking threat. With a great turn towards goal to beat his opponent, sophomore Luka Ohadike hit the near post with a side-footed shot along the turf. With the Rams' goalkeeper yet to recover from his initial dive, senior Joe Raymond volleyed the rebound into an open net.
  • Overall, the Mammoths will be pleased with a dominant display to set the tone for the rest of the season.
