Mammoths lasso Lehman, 67-29

BRONX, NY – The Amherst College Women's basketball team defeated Lehman College in a 67-29 decision Monday night in the APEX Main Gym following double-digit scoring from Elizabeth Cain, Laura Mendell, and Anna Tranum.
 
The Mammoths (11-2, 1-0) will face Trinity College in conference play at the Ray Oosting Gymnasium in Hartford, CT, Friday at 7 p.m.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
 
 * The Mammoths opened the game with an eight-point run following a layup and jumper from Cain and layups from Maya Cwalina and Tranum. The Mammoths had an 8-0 advantage over the lightning before Lehman's Heaven Figueroa broke up the Mammoths scoring with two points on a step back. With one minute and 30 seconds remaining on the clock, the Mammoths scored five consecutive points following a three-pointer from Annie McCarthy and two successful free throws from Cwalina to close the quarter with a 17-5 lead.
 
* In the first two minutes of the second quarter, the Mammoths ceded two points to the Lightning, calling a short timeout with seven minutes and 21 seconds on the clock. The Mammoths resumed play with a driving layup from Kori Barach, a free throw from Brielle Renwick, a layup and two jumpers from Cain, and a layup from Macie Nugent to drive the score up to 28-9, Amherst. The Mammoths' run was broken up only by two successful free throws from the Lightning to which the Mammoths responded with layups from Nugent, Mendell, and Sylvia Liddle to end the quarter with a 36-11 lead.
 
* The Mammoths had a closer scoring margin to the Lightning in quarter three, scoring 12 points to the Lightning's 10. Nugent and Barach both shot three-pointers with six minutes and 26 seconds and eight minutes remaining in the quarter to generate strong momentum for the Mammoths. Renwick had a strong close in quarter three, shooting two layups in the paint with one minute and 15 seconds and 34 seconds remaining on the clock. Amherst closed quarter three with a 48-21 advantage.
 
* In quarter four, the Mammoths had a 13-point run to ensure a massive victory over the Lightning. Mendell shot two layups and a three-pointer, while Tranum, Cain, and Cwalina all shot layups to contribute to the scoring scene. The Mammoths secured a 67-29 victory.
 
BY THE NUMBERS:
 
* The Mammoths scored over two times as many points as the Lightning with 67 compared to the Lightning's 29.
 
* Cain, Mendell, and Tranum each achieved double-digit scoring, with 14, 11, and 10 points respectively.
