Mendell's free throws down the stretch help Mammoths edge Hamilton, 65-58

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College women's basketball team defeated Hamilton College, 65-58, in a tight battle behind seven free throw from Laura Mendell in the final minutes of Saturday afternoon's game in the LeFrak Gymnasium. 

The Mammoths (13-4, 3-2) will face New Jersey City University in Jersey City, NJ, at the Gothic Knights' John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center Monday at 7 p.m. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: 

* Mendell netted two free throws in the final three minutes of quarter four that tied the game for the Mammoths and began a nine-point run comprising of all free throws to lead the Mammoths to victory. 

* The Mammoths trailed the Continentals for the majority of quarter one until Maya Cwalina netted a three-pointer with three minutes and 26 seconds on the clock to take over the lead for Amherst, 12-11. The Mammoths added four points to the board following layups from Mendell and Cwalina to exit the first quarter with a 16-11 lead. 

* Amherst continued to increase their lead over Hamilton in the first half of quarter two, with Sylvia Liddle scoring an impressive three-pointer following Mendell's assist. The Mammoths entered halftime with a 27-22 lead. 

* Hamilton crept back up in the third quarter, tying the score 30-30. Mendell turned things around with a three-pointer with five minutes and 31 seconds on the clock. Annie McCarthy followed with another three-pointer 40 seconds later, and Cwalina scored a jumper and two layups to increase the Mammoths' lead to 42-37. Kori Barach then followed with two free throws, and Mendell added a layup. 

* Amherst kicked off the final quarter with a 46-42 lead over Hamilton. The Continentals and Mammoths went back and forth in the first half of quarter four until Hamilton's Sam Glickman retook the lead with a three-pointer. Amherst continued to battle, with Sylvia Liddle netting a three that tied the game, 56-56. Hamilton retook the lead again until Mendell's two free throws tied the game, 58-58, with a little under three minutes remaining. Mendells' two points began a nine-point free throw run that ensured victory over the Continentals, 65-58.   

BY THE NUMBERS: 

* Mendell scored 20 points, and Cwalina scored 16. She added 8 rebounds.

* Amherst sank 19 of 27 attempted free throws in the victory.
