Mammoths drop hard-fought battle with No. 1 Tufts, 2-0

MEDFORD, MA — After beating Keene State away six days ago, the Mammoths headed to Medford for the third consecutive away game to play a NESCAC rival, Tufts University. Tufts entered the game with an impressive 8-1-2 record and a #1 national ranking by USC as of October 12th. Unfortunately, the Jumbos were too tough a challenge for the Mammoths tonight on Bello field, as Tufts came away with a 2-0 win. After a physical first half with no goals, Tufts was able to find the back of the net twice in the second half. Amherst continued to apply pressure at the end of the second half, creating some opportunities, but was unable to score.

The loss was the Mammoths' third of the season, giving them a record of 6-3-3 ahead of the last three games of the regular season.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The defense was strong from both teams in the first half, not giving either team many opportunities to score. The best chance for the Mammoths came in the 22nd minute by sophomore Michael Jericho. He caught a pass in the box by Luka Ohadike, flicking the ball with his right to the left to set up a shot in the middle of the box. His shot failed to gain enough power, leading to a save by Tufts' Nikola Antic.
  • Tufts came to the second half with a lot of passion, creating a dangerous opportunity in the 50th minute, where Tufts's Ethan Jett took a shot in the box, which was blocked by Riley Priddy's arm, resulting in a foul and a penalty kick for the Jumbos. Tufts's Daniel Yanez was able to capitalize on the foul and shot the penalty into the bottom right corner of the goal, putting the Jumbos ahead 1-0 early in the second half.
  • In the 72nd minute, Amherst was awarded a free kick right outside the box, creating an opportunity for the Mammoths to equalize. First-year Vincent Akanbo went for the goal, missing just slightly over the left crossbar.
  • Tufts extended their lead to 2-0 in the 73rd minute when Ellis Denby went for a bicycle kick inside the box from a long throw-in, finding Xavier Canfin, who tapped the ball to the back of the net.
  • From a 0-2 deficit, the Mammoths kept pushing for chances, but were unable to score. The best chance came in the 85th minute when Michael Jericho took a header towards the goal from the center of the box, but was unable to find the frame and pulled it just wide.
BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Amherst had 5 corner kicks; Tufts had 6.
  • Amherst had 8 shots (1 on goal); Tufts had 13 (7 on goal).
