AMHERST, Mass. -- A trio of first-years combined for 41 points Sunday, leading the Amherst College men's basketball team to a 95-53 victory over Mount St. Mary's in LeFrak Gymnasium.
The Mammoths improved to 5-1 on the season. They host MCLA Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The Knights fell to 2-4 on the season.Â

Amherst put up two big runs, the first was a game-opening 23-4 run that had the Mammoths up 19 after only 7 minutes and 33 seconds. The second came early in the half and went 17-0 and gave Amherst a 28-point advantage 5 minutes into the final half.Â
Amherst finished the game 15-of-30 (50 percent) from beyond the 3-point line.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

Drew Martin opened up the scoring with a lay-up 36 seconds into the first half after Elias Chim found him open underneath with a pass. After Matt Walsh tied it for the visitors, McCain stepped into the first of four three-pointers on the day for a 5-2 lead 78 seconds into the game. He followed that up 43 seconds later with another trey and an 8-2 advantage. Neville came down with an offensive rebound and hit a jumper for a 10-2 lead Neville struck again with 16:04 to go, receiving a pass from Martin and draining a trey for a 13-2 lead.
* After a Matt Monaco jumper made it 13-4, McCain was back at it, draining another three-ball for a 16-4 lead. Following a decent stretch where neither team could score, Woodberry ended the nonsense with his own trey and a 19-4 advantage with 14:09 left in the half. The Mammoths were 5 of their first 8 three-pointer attempts out of the gate and went into the locker room up 43-29 at halftime.Â
* MSM's Brenden Graham opened the second half with a three-pointer to make it a 43-32 game, but that just seemed to jump start the Mammoths, who responded with a 17-0 run ignited by
Zane Adnan's three-ball from the top of the key 23 seconds later. Hammond had a lay-up, and Neville followed up with a steal that led to a Hammond three and a 51-32 lead. Neville then grabbed a defensive board that led to another Hammond trey and a 54-32 advantage. Hammond then snared a defensive board and followed with his third consecutive trey for a 57-32 lead. The run ended when Woodberry buried a three-pointer following a MSM turnover to give the hosts a 28-point lead.Â

* Amherst held a large 52-30 edge on the glass in Sunday's win. Neville finished with a double-double, scoring 14 and grabbing 10 boards. Chin had 9 boards, a team-leading 8 assists, and 7 points in the win. Margolin had 8 rebounds to go with his 12 points, and added 2 assists.Â

Ryan Hempfling scored his first collegiate points in the win and finished with 4 total.Â
