AMHERST, MA – A career-high 16-point outing from first-year
Za'Nyah Bernard led the No. 15 ranked Amherst women's basketball team to their sixth straight win to open the season. Taking on Colby-Sawyer at home on Hixon Court for the final time in 2025, the Mammoths put on a clinic, with a lights-out shooting performance from the entire squad clinching a 78-42 victory.
With the win, the Mammoths improve to 6-0 on the season while the Chargers drop to 4-7. This was the Mammoths' home last game of the semester, with the team taking a break until the D3 Hoops Classic, which begins on Sun, Dec. 28. They will open the tournament that day, facing Gettysburg College in Las Vegas, Nev, with tip-off scheduled for 3 p.m. eastern time.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths came out of the locker rooms firing, going on an impressive 29-4 run to open the game. Buckets from
Annie McCarthy,
Elizabeth Cain,
Laura Mendell, and
Anna Tranum in the first 2:45 opened up an 11-point lead early.
* Two quick scores from the visitors were made the score 11-4, and that is the closest they would get for the rest of the game. Those were only points the Mammoths allowed in the first, as they shut out the Chargers in the final 5:30 of the quarter --- they also scored 18 points of their own, with 10 from Cain alone, to take a 29-4 lead into the second.
* Bernard took over in the second quarter, scoring 10 of her 16 points in the frame. She went 3-4 in the quarter, including 2-2 on three-pointers, to help Amherst extend the lead to 51-20 at the half. Renwick also put in a great shift, scoring 7 points and pulling down 3 boards during the run.
* The third quarter, usually the Mammoths best quarter, saw Colby-Sawyer outscore the Mammoths as the two teams both seemed to have more trouble finding the bottom of the basket.
Brooke Ingemi was the spark in the third, hitting two free throws and slashing to the bucket for a layup in less than a minute to keep pace with the Chargers' offense.
* The fourth quarter saw the Mammoths pull away once again, as their depth put on a show. First-years Bernard and
Avery Myerberg put on a show in the final part of the quarter, driving hard to the basket and finishing in traffic on multiple occasions, helping their team ice the game. When the final horn blew, the Mammoths walked off the court with a 78-42 win.
