PASADENA, CA – First-year Sherron Woodberry scored a season-high 22 points, pouring in 18 points from three-pointers alone, to help the Amherst College men's basketball team defeat Caltech 80-64 on Tuesday afternoon at Braun Athletic Center.
Amherst improved to 8-3 overall while Caltech fell to 3-8 on the season. The Mammoths will stay on the road to face California Lutheran next, who they will battle at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Gilbert Arena.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
*Woodberry pushed Amherst into an early lead, sinking three points from behind the arch with 18:02 remaining to put the Mammoths on the scoreboard 3-0.
*Between 16:46 and 14:48 remaining, Amherst bucketed four back-to-back three-pointers to gain a strong 15-1 advantage. Woodberry bookended the stretch with two three-pointers, while junior Marc Garraud and first-year K.J. Neville each netted one bucket from beyond the line.
*With 9:31 to play, junior Nate Pabis sank home a three-pointer to make it 25-10. Under one minute later, senior Drew Martin dribbled pole-to-pole, then found Garraud for a feed back to Pabis, who sank an additional three points.
*Amherst's defensive unit coalesced to limit the Beavers to free throws in the final five minutes of the half, riding a Pabis jumper and a three-pointer from junior Johnny McCain to give Amherst a 50-29 lead in the final minute before the buzzer.
*A 6-0 Caltech drive at the start of the second half, highlighted by two back-to-back layups from first-year Dorian Glogovac, made it a 15-point game at 50-35 with 18:01 remaining.
*Senior Chris Hammond made a steal, then fed to Woodberry outside the arch to pour in three more points for the Mammoths with 16:06 to play.
*Hammond continued the surge with 7:02 remaining, settling a missed Beaver free throw and driving down the court before netting a layup from the paint, 66-48.
*Both sides traded free throws in the final five minutes, battling for a final decision of 80-64 in Amherst's favor.
BY THE NUMBERS:
*Amherst held the offensive advantage, shooting 43.5% (27-62) compared to 31.7% (20-63) of field goal attempts, 41.9% (13-31) compared to 25% (7-28) of three-pointer attempts, and 65% (13-20) compared to 60.7% (17-28) of free throws.
*Glogovac led as the highest-scoring player, netting 36 points. Glogovac was the only player to notch a double-double, making an additional 11 rebounds.
*Woodberry scored 22 points, the most of any Amherst player. The first-year also went 6-8 in three-pointer attempts.
