#10 Mammoths pounce on Pride, 11-5

AMHERST, Mass. -- Junior attacker Bob Gross recorded a hat trick, and Amherst College dominated from the start in an 11-5 victory over Springfield on Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium on Tuesday night.
  • #10 Amherst built a 3-0 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 9-1 by halftime, controlling possession and capitalizing on offensive opportunities. The Mammoths' defense held Springfield to just one goal in the first half.
  • With the win, Amherst improved to 3-0 on the season, while Springfield fell to 1-4. The Mammoths will travel to Colby College for their next matchup on Saturday at 12 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Ben Wick opened the scoring at 10:51 in the first quarter, assisting Devon Christian for a 1-0 lead. Wick then scored unassisted at 1:17, followed by a buzzer-beater goal from Matthew Sheinberg at 3.0 seconds to give Amherst a 3-0 edge.
  • The Mammoths continued their offensive surge in the second quarter as Bob Gross found the net twice—first on an assist from Ben Bruno making it 4-0 Amherst, then on a feed from Devon Christian. Springfield finally got on the board with a goal from Brady Soldo, assisted by Riley Burgmyer advancing the score to 5-1.
  • Amherst responded immediately, with Brenden Reilly scoring an unassisted goal at 9:14, followed by Alex Giacobbe just 29 seconds later making it 7-1 Amherst. The Mammoths closed out the half with goals from Ben Wick (assisted by Gross at 2:15) and Bennett Chow (unassisted at 1:14), making it 9-1 at halftime.
  • In the third quarter, Amherst extended its lead to 10-1 as Brenden Reilly scored off a Willie Doyle assist at 1:13.
  • Bob Gross completed his hat trick early in the fourth quarter, scoring at 14:25 on an assist from Reilly (11-1). Springfield fought back with four late goals—Rory Scanlon (assist from Soldo), Jake Degnan (assist from Sal Posillico), a man-up goal by Nick Savastano (assist from Scanlon), and Ryan McDonald's unassisted strike at 1:41.
BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Amherst out shot Springfield 43-28.
  • The Mammoths won 16 of the game's 18 face-offs.
  • Amherst picked up 34 ground balls compared to 23 for Springfield.
  • Goalkeeper Brooks Catlin led Mammoths goalies in saves, making 10 saves in net for Amherst, while Springfield's goalkeeper recorded 17 saves.
