WALTHAM,
Mass. -- The Amherst College baseball team got a jump on spring Saturday, opening its season versus Brandeis University in a game played at Waltham High School.
Despite 10 hits, the Mammoths fell to the Judges, 6-4.
Amherst is scheduled to play at Springfield College Tuesday at 3 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Down 1-0, Amherst took a 2-1 lead with two runs in the third. With one out,
Jack Boyle lined a triple to left field. First year
Justin Orridge then singled to drive Boyle in and tie the game.
Ryan McIntyre scored Orridge with a sacrifice fly for a 2-1 lead.
* Brandeis answered with two in the fourth and two in the fifth to build a 5-2 lead.
* It was 6-2 entering the top of the eighth when the Mammoths rallied.
Jack McDermott worked a lead-off walk and took third when
Jack Sampedro drove a double to right. McIntyre followed with another sac fly, and
Charlie LaFreniere then doubled to right to score Sampedro and put runners on second and third with Amherst trailing 6-4.
Tyler McCord walked to load the bases, but an inning-ending double play ended the threat.
* In the Amherst ninth,
A.J. Zaccareo was hit by a pitch to open the frame and Boyle followed with a single. But after a strikeout, Brandeis induced a game-ending double play.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Six of the Mammoths 10 hits went for extra bases. McCord was 2 for 3 with two doubles and a walk. Boyle was 2 for 4 with a triple and run scored. LaFreniere was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Orridge was 2 for 5 in his first collegiate game with a run scored and an RBI.
