Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Flynn nets two as Mammoths power past Mules, 4-1, in NCAA quarterfinal

AMHERST, Mass. – Two goals from first-year Bea Flynn and single goals from Natalie Fu and Ayla Abban marked a 4-1 victory for the Amherst College women's ice hockey team over the Colby College Mules on their home ice in the quarterfinals of the NCAA DIII tournament.

The Mammoths improved their record to 22-5-1 overall.

The Mammoths have earned their ticket into the final four teams in the NCAA tournament at Hunt Arena in River Falls, Wisconsin, on Friday (Mar. 28) at 4 p.m. or 8 p.m. The time has yet to be announced.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* At 2:44 in the first period, Cara Mancini pressured the Mules' defense in their zone, channeling a Colby defender against the boards. Skating in from neutral ice, Abban intercepted a pass made from the boards, brought the puck toward the slot, and lifted it into the back of the net – capitalizing off of the turnover for the first goal of the evening.

* On a Mammoth power play, Marie-Eve Marleau cycled the puck back to Maeve Reynolds at the left point. Reynolds then sent a cross-ice pass to Annabel Raffin, who fired it toward the net. The puck found its way to Abban in the slot, where she lifted a backhanded shot into the top right corner with 5:39 remaining in the first period.

* In the right face-off circle of Colby's end, Flynn handed the puck off to Emily Hohmann in the right corner. Hohmann delivered the puck to the crease, where Abban was stationed for a scramble to ensue. Rushing in from the high slot, Flynn corralled the puck off a deflection and lifted it into the back of the net, securing her second goal of the game with 13:43 left in the second period.

* In a battle along the left-side boards, Amherst's Sami Lester swept the puck back to Gretchen Dann at the left point, where she fired it toward the net. A Colby skate blocked the initial attempt, but Fu was able to capitalize on the loose puck just outside the crease, tapping it in for a goal just 1:46 into the final period.

* In the Mammoths' left corner, the puck slipped out to Colby's Anya Jiang for her to carry it towards the net and flick it into the back of the net to break the shutout with 15:03 remaining in the third period.
