AMHERST, Mass. -- Senior
Jack Sampedro's three-run bases-clearing double capped a seven-run sixth inning Wednesday as the Amherst College baseball defeated Eastern Connecticut State, 9-3, on Memorial Field.
The win moved the Mammoths to 11-12 on the season. They will travel to Middletown, CT., Friday for a 4 p.m. showdown wit Little 3 and NESCAC West rival Wesleyan University, the host the Cardinals Saturday for a doubleheader in Amherst with the opener beginning at 1 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first in Wednesday's clash.
Jack Boyle opened the frame with a single and after the first out, stole second. Walks to Sampedro and
Tyler McCord loaded the bases for
Charlie LaFreniere, who drew another free pass to force home Boyle with the game's first run.
Ryan McIntyre then rolled into a fielder's choice that scored Sampedro with the second run.
* It was a mid-week bullpen game for Amherst and senior
Tyson Luna got the start, throwing the first two innings and getting nicked for one run. Senior
Naaveen Narayanan came on to throw the next two frames and allowed one earned run that tied the game, 2-2.
* Sophomore
Matt Tabet took the bump for the Mammoths and held the score at 2-2 through the top of the sixth.
* Sampedro ignited the big sixth inning with a lead-off single. After an out, LaFreniere ripped a single to right, and McIntyre came though with an RBI-single that scored Sampedro with the go-ahead run.
Leo Foust worked a walk that loaded the bases. After the second out, consecutive bases-loaded walks to
Aiden Dubetsky, Boyle and
Jack McDermott forced in three runs to make it 6-2 Amherst. Sampedro then capped the outburst by launching a shot into the left-center field gap that cleared the bases for a 9-2 lead.

Adrian Caron and
Weslley De Oliveira Jr. combined to throw the final three innings, allowing just three hits and one run.

* The Mammoths finished with 8 hits and drew 9 walks from EConn hurlers. Sampedro finished 2 for 4 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. Dubetsky went 1 for 2 with 2 walks, an RBI and a run scored. LaFreniere fashioned the same line.
* Tabet (2-2) earned the win, allowing one hit and no runs over two innings while striking out one.
