AMHERST, Mass. – A six-run second inning, highlighted by a home run from first-year
Abby Rebhan and a two-run triple from first-year
Lulu Leppard, led the Amherst College softball team to explode into the lead and never look back as they secured two victories against Trinity College on Saturday afternoon, winning its first game 9-5 and its second 11-5.
Amherst improved to 14-13 overall and 5-7 in the NESCAC, while Trinity dropped to 8-19 on the season and 2-12 in the conference. The Mammoths will hit the road to face Worcester Polytechnic Institute next, where they'll play the Goats in a doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23

Game Two: Amherst College 11, Trinity College 5
*Amherst got on the board in the first frame as Leppard singled up the middle to plate senior
America Rangel a run, 1-0.
*Trinity fired back to regain the lead in the top of the second. Senior Hannah Mullaney crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Emily Killoran and first-year Kellie Schroffner scored on a throwing error to make it 2-1.
*The Mammoth bats put their collective feet on the gas in the bottom of the second, scoring six runs in the inning. First-year
Laura Daniels equalized on a wild pitch, then first-year
May Mishima made it 3-2 on a groundout. Leppard followed up with a two-run triple to right center field, plating sophomore
Heidi Li and junior
Olivia Aitkin a run each. Finally, Rebhan slammed a home run to left field to close the uprising 7-2.
*Two singles from Trinity weakened the margin to 7-3 in the third as senior Taylor Mikolajczak and junior Abigail Alper tallied runs.
*A double in the fourth shortened Amherst's lead to 7-5, but the Mammoths quickly fire back with a three-run rally. Senior
Dani Torres Werra started the period with a double-RBI homerun to plate two runs, and Mishima followed up with a sacrifice fly to plate another, 10-5.
*Amherst tallied their final run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth as Rebhan hit a sacrifice fly to lead Leppard to make her way around the diamond.
*Junior
Abby Moravek closed the battle with impressive work within the circle, striking out all three batters in the seventh to give Amherst the victory.

Game One: Amherst College 9, Trinity College 5
*Junior Abigail Alper put Trinity ahead early, hitting a double-RBI home run to take the visitors past Amherst 2-0.
*Amherst exploded into the lead with six runs in the bottom of the first. Leppard began the rally with a single to right field to plate Rangel a run. A fielding error added two more runs to give Amherst the lead at 3-2. Nordstrom then added two more with a double to left field that led Torres Werra and Rebhan to make their way around the diamond. Finally, junior
Abby Kong hit a single down the left field line to plate Nordstrom a run and close the inning 6-2.
*The rest of the contest was a back-and-forth affair until the bottom of the sixth, when Rebhan hit an RBI single and Torres Werra hit an RBI triple to add a run each, 8-2. Finally, Nordstrom reached on a fielding error and Torres Werra crossed the plate to extend the lead to 9-2.
*Trinity weakened Amherst's lead to 9-5 in the final frame as a two-RBI double and a throwing error gave the visitors three runs, but the effort was not enough.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Rangel was 3 for 4 with a run scored in the win. Leppard and Torres Werra were each 2 for 4. Torres Werra earned the win from the circle, evening her record at 4-4 on the season.
