#13 Mammoths Stumble Against #2 Jumbos 20-9

MEDFORD, MA. – Despite three-goal days from leading scorers Emily Petersen and Bridget Finley, the Mammoths suffered a tough loss against No. 2 Tufts on Saturday, April 19. In their penultimate game of the 2025 regular season, the Mammoths traveled to Medford to take on the Jumbos but never found an offensive rhythm, falling 20-9 on the road.

With the loss, the Mammoths fall to 10-4 overall while Tufts improved to 13-1. Amherst will return home on Tuesday, April 22 for their regular season finale, taking on No. 15 Trinity. The game against the Bantams is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. on Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths started fast, scoring the first three goals of the game. Finley opened the scoring just 44 seconds into the contest: Mia Raven won a free-position opportunity and drove in on the cage before passing off to Finley, who quick-sticked into the net for the 1-0 lead. Just 45 seconds later, Petersen got her first on another free-position, this crashing the net and bouncing the ball past the Tufts goaltender. Petersen got her second just under five minutes in, scoring off a Clara Sosa assist to make it 3-0.

* The Jumbos netted four-straight to take the lead heading into the second and made it six-consecutive goals with two more to open the quarter, giving them a 6-3 lead halfway through the frame.

* Sofia Guttmann put a stop to the Mammoths' goal-scoring drought, taking her defender to school and before rifling a low shot in for goal number four. Only 30 seconds later, Amherst got another one of their signatures of late – Sydney Kang received the ball at X and fired a pass to a cutting Raven, who finished from point blank range. Petersen then sealed her hattrick to pull her side within one at 6-7.

* However, again, the Tufts offense stepped on the gas, pulling away at the end of the half by netting four straight to go into the break up 11-6. They carried that momentum into the second half, tallying the first four goals of the third to lead 15-6 with 7:42 left in the quarter.

* Finley temporarily stopped the bleeding there, scoring a man-up goal before the Jumbos tallied one more time to lead 16-7 heading into the final quarter. She then got her hattrick by scoring the first goal of the fourth quarter, cutting to the goal and scoring from close-range off a pass from Kate Becker at X.

* Unfortunately, the Mammoths couldn't claw their way back, and Tufts would pot four more before a goal from another unassisted goal from Guttmann with 45 seconds left closed the scoring. The final horn sounded with Amherst dropping a tough game 20-9.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* With her three goals against Tufts, Petersen has now scored 40 goals this season. Coming off an injury that kept her off the field in 2024, the junior has had the best season of her career, passing the 40-goal mark for the first time in her career to go along with eight assists.

* Tufts won the game with fluidity on offense --- they took more than 10 shots in two of four quarters and turned the ball over only eight times compared to the Mammoths' 17.

* Lily Samoska made six saves on the day.
