Mammoths drop 7-5 decision to Trinity

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Cole Mascolo delivered a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning Wednesday night, lifting Trinity College over the Amherst College baseball team, 7-5, on the Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium.

With the loss, Amherst fell to 14-14 overall. They will play Hamilton in Clinton, NY Friday at 4 p.m. in the first game of a three-game series against the Continentals. Trinity improved its record to 15-14 overall. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Down 2-0, Amherst got on the board in the top of the second when Ryan McIntyre led off with a single and moved to second wit two outs. Justin Orridge delivered an RBI-singe through the hole between first and second to make it 2-1. 

* Down 4-1, the Mammoths scored four times in the top of the fourth to take a 5-4 lead. With one out, Charlie LaFreniere got things started with a single. With two outs, Orridge singled to left and Ben Smith walked to loaded the bases. Jack Boyle came through with a two-run single to right that made it 4-3 and Aiden Dubetsky followed with an opposite-field single to left to tie the game. Boyle and Dubetsky then orchestrated a double steal and when the throw to second got away, Boyle raced home with the go-ahead run. 

* Trinity tied the game with a single run in the fifth and then took the lead in the bottom of the eighth. 

* In the top of the ninth, Amherst loaded the bases with two outs before a groundout to second ended the contest. 

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Matt Tabet (2-3) took the loss, allowing two runs over 1 2/3 innings of relief. 

* Amherst had 10 hits. Dubetsky was 2 for 3 with 2 walks and an RBI. Orridge was 2 for 3 with a walk, RBI and run scored.
