Orridge, Chae lead Mammoths to 17-4 win at Hamilton

CLINTON, N.Y. -- First-year Justin Orridge drove in six runs and sophomore Yoon Chae threw eight innings of six-hit, two-run ball Sunday as the Amherst College baseball team completed a three-game sweep of NESCAC West rival Hamilton with a 17-4 win over the Continentals' at the Loop Road Athletic Complex. 

The Mammoths improved to 17-4 on the season, and finish the regular season 9-3 against their NESCAC West Division competitors. The Mammoths will host a best-of-three quarterfinal series vs. the third seed from the NESCAC East Division May 3-4. 

Next up for Amherst is a 6 p.m. game Tuesday at Brandeis University in what will be its regular-season finale. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths have been scoring in bunches early on recently and Sunday was no exception as they exploded for four runs in the first, two in the second, seven in the third and four more in the fourth to build a 17-1 lead. Amherst outscored Hamilton in the three-game series, 52-12. 

* In the Amherst first, Aiden Dubetsky led off with a single and Tyler McCord reached on an infield single to put runners on the corners. After two outs, Charlie LaFreniere worked a walk to load the bases and bring up Orridge. who crushed a ball to right-center field that cleared the fence for a grand slam home run and a 4-0 lead. 

* The Mammoths added two in the second when Ben Smith was hit by a pitch and scampered to third on a single up the middle off the bat of Jack Boyle. Boyle promptly stole second and when the throw sailed into center field, Smith raced home with the fifth run of the game. With two outs, Jack Sampedro lined an RBI-double to right for a 6-1 lead. 

* A LaFreniere single and two walks loaded the bases with no outs for the Mammoths in the third. Smith lined a single to left that scored two runs, one on an error. Dubetsky and Orridge capped the inning with two-run singles that made it 13-1.

* In the Mammoths' fourth, McCord ripped an RBI-single and LaFreniere capped the four-run frame with a two-run single to right. 

* Chae kept the Continentals in check, scattering six hits over eight innings of work. He walked three and struck out five to pick up the victory. 

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Orridge finished 2 for 3 with 6 RBI and 2 runs scored. Boyle was 3 for 3 with 3 runs scored. Dubetsky was 3 for 6 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored.
