AMHERST, Mass. – Two strikeouts from first-year
Abby Rebhan and a three-run seventh inning led the Amherst softball team to secure a thrilling come-from-behind 10-9 victory over Hamilton College in their first game of its Sunday doubleheader at the Amherst College Softball Field.
It was Senor Day for te Mammoths, who honored
America Rangel and
Dani Torres Werra before the first game.
The second game saw the Continental bats come alive as they defeated the Mammoths 8-0 in five innings.
Amherst's record moved to 17-16 on the season and 7-9 in NESCAC play. Hamilton moved to 15-11 overall and 6-8 in NESCAC play. The Mammoths will travel to Waterville to compete in their final contest of the regular season against Colby College on Saturday,
Game One: Amherst College 10, Hamilton College 9
*The Continentals came out swinging with a five-run first inning. First-year Miranda Mosqueda put Hamilton on the board with a single down the left field line to plate senior Emma Tansky a run. A groundout and a single from junior Alexis Mayer and sophomore Gaby Guerra respectively added two more points while a double from senior Charlie Quinn scored Hamilton's fourth. Finally, junior Alison Zorn finished the inning with a left-field single to close 5-0.

Lulu Leppard reached first on a walk, first-year
Abby Rebhan hit a double to left center field to score the third baseman, 5-1.
*A home run from Mayer extended Hamilton's lead to 7-1 in the top of the second as the center fielder plated two runs.
*The visitors added one point in each of the fourth and fifth innings, scoring on a left-field single from Guerra and a groundout from first-year Yael Everett.
*The Amherst bats stepped on the gas in the fifth, weakening Hamilton's lead to 9-5. Junior
Olivia Aitkin led off with a single to score junior
Abby Moravek. With two outs, senior
Dani Torres Werra smashed a triple to right center field to plate Aitkin, Rebhan, and senior
America Rangel a run.
*The Mammoths continued to weaken the margin in the bottom of the sixth as Moravek crushed a prodigious home run to left field, over th scoreboard, plating her and first-year
Laura Daniels a point to make it 9-7.
*Rebhan struck out two Hamilton batters in the seventh to keep the Continentals scoreless.
*Torres Werra led off an exciting final frame, scoring first-year
May Mishima on a single to right field. Sophomore
Emma Nordstrom clinched the equalizer on a double to left center, leading Torres Werra to complete her run around the diamond.
Laura Daniels then hit a slow roller toward third. The Continentals made a play on pinch-runner Abby Log at third, but the throw dribbled down the left-field line. Kong started, stopped, then started home again. The throw from left had her beat, but the ball was dropped as Kong dove in with the winning run.
BY THE NUMBERS:
*Torres Werra went 2-4 with 4 RBI, Moravek went 2-3 with 2 RBI, and Rebhan went 1-2 with 1 RBI. Mayer had 3 RBI for the Continentals and was 1-2.
*Rebhan had 2 strikeouts over 5 innings while Torres Werra pitched with 1 strikeout over 1 inning.
Game Two: Hamilton College 8, Amherst College 0 (5 inn.)
*Hamilton got on the board early, scoring four runs in the second inning as singles from junior Sofia Santana, Everett, and Mayer led four runners to cross the plate.
* The fourth inning saw the Continentals extend the margin to 7-0. Santana scored on a Mayer single through the left side and first-year Miranda Mosqueda added a second on a wild pitch. Finally, junior Jordan Merklin hit a sacrifice fly to score Mayer.
*While the Mammoths continued to struggle to find hits, Hamilton edged the lead to 8-0 in the fifth as junior Hadley Rodgers hit a double to plate Tansky with a run, 8-0.
*After Torres Werra reached third on a lead-off single and error in the bottom of the fifth, Nordstrom walked and reached second on a groundout from Moravek. The Mammoths looked to score, but back-to-back strikeouts ended their momentum.
BY THE NUMBERS:
*Both Li and Torres Werra went 1-2. On the Hamilton side, Mayer went 2-3 with 3 RBI and Santana went 1-3 with 1 RBI and 2 runs.
*Moravek tallied two strikeouts over four innings.
