WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Junior
Bennett Chow recorded two goals to lead the Amherst College men's lacrosse team in today's game against Williams College. Despite holding the lead during the first half of the game, a high-scoring second half for Williams led to a 9-6 defeat of the Mammoths.
Amherst and Williams were tied at the end of quarter one with a score of 1-1. Amherst enjoyed a high-scoring second quarter, racking up three goals to Williams' two to enter halftime with a 4-3 advantage. The Mammoths conceded four points to the Ephs in quarter three but managed to put two on the board, regardless. Despite a strong effort, the Mammoths lost by a three-point margin, 9-6, by the end of the game.
With this loss, Amherst now has a 7-2 record on the season. The Mammoths will return to action against Connecticut College for the One Love Game on Wednesday (April 9) at 6 pm on Gooding Field.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Williams' Jack Sartorius fired the first successful shot of the game, narrowly scoring a point for the Ephs. Amherst responded well, with
Nicholas Kopp winning a faceoff against Williams' Ian Kim.
Willie Doyle followed with a swift assist, setting up
Brendan Reilly to score a goal with 9:21 remaining on the clock.
* Amherst and Williams were tied 1-1 entering the second quarter. The two teams went back and forth for the majority of the quarter. Amherst put a second point on the board early into quarter two, attributed to
Alex Giacobbe, who acted on an assist from
Alex Vlacich. Williams tied the score 2-2 at the 11-minute mark. Amherst once again took control of the lead.
Thompson Lau picked up a ground ball and assisted
Dylan Hsu in scoring a goal with 7:25 on the clock. Williams tied the score once more following a goal from Ryan Johnson. After a successful clear attempt, Chow scored another goal for the Mammoths, elevating the score to 4-3.
* Amherst kicked off quarter three with Hsu picking up a ground ball and making a swift pass to Chow. Chow then turned this pass into a goal, elevating the Mammoths' lead to 5-3 with 14:07 on the clock. In the four minutes that followed, the Ephs racked up three points to seize the lead, 6-5. During the remainder of the quarter, Amherst secured one more point when Reilly assisted Doyle to a man-up goal.
* The Mammoths entered quarter four with a 7-6 disadvantage. The Ephs scored two points over the course of the final quarter, which led to the defeat of the Mammoths.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst outshot Williams, 40-33.
* The Mammoths won 12 of 19 faceoffs.
* Amherst collected 39 ground balls compared to Williams' 38.
