PENFIELD, N.Y. -- A rain-deluged NCAA Div. III Men's Golf Championship continued Thursday with some golfers getting through 29 holes as officials modified today's schedule to include part of the fourth and final round because of even more impending rain at the Midvale Country Club.
Undeterred by the cold and damp conditions, Amherst College first-year
Andre Zhang fired a 1-under 71 for the third round and sat at 1-over through the first nine holes of his fourth round, ending the day in 7th place individually 225 golfers taking part in the event.
The Mammoths, who made the cut via a sudden-death play-off involving four teams Wednesday afternoon, sit in 17th place after the day, which for all the Amherst golfers, including at least half (nine holes) of the fourth and final round.
The Mammoths will tee off at 7:45 a.m. Friday to conclude their tournament, hopefully, before rain washes away the event.
Amherst collectively shot a 16-over 304 for the third round Thursday, led by Zhang's 1-under 71. First-year
Jan Ebbinge notched a 5-over 77 while junior
Paari Kaviyarasu and senior
Steven Chen fired matching 6-over 78s.
The highlight of the third round -- and the day -- had to be the par-5 third hole at Midvale, where Kaviyarasu managed an eagle and then was matched later by Zhang, who also had an eagle on the 544-yard hole. Senior
Mark Vitels shot an 8-over 80 for the third round, but managed four birdies along the way. Vitels is even par after the first 10 holes of the fourth round, shooting two additional birdies along the way.
Zhang had the only other fourth-round birdie for the Mammoths, and sits at 1-over after nine holes.
