Four Mammoths selected to CSC Academic All-District Team

AMHERST, Mass. -- Four members of the Amherst College softball team garnered College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honors, announced earlier today: seniors America Rangel and Dani Torres Werra and juniors Abby Moravek and Olivia Aitkin

The Academic All-District teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. Student-athletes must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50 and have played in 90 percent or started 66 percent of their team's games to be eligible.

Torres Werra is a Law, Jurisprudence, and Social Thought (LJST) and sexuality, women's & gender studies double major from Merced, Calif. The senior was one of two Mammoths to earn All-NESCAC Second Team honors this season. Starting in all 33 games she appeared in, Torres Werra led the team with a batting average of .351, producing 34 hits including two home runs and 22 RBIs. In the field, the senior recorded 31 put outs and seven assists for a fielding percentage of .927. 

Moravek is pursuing a chemistry degree at Amherst, hailing from Libertyville, Ill. From the circle, the junior went 8-4 with a 3.27 ERA over 81 innings including a complete-game, five-hit shutout of Milwaukee School of Engineering. 

Aitkin is a LJST and political science double major from Durham, N.C. Starting in all 35 games she appeared in, the junior was second in the team with put outs, totaling 66 on the season with a fielding percentage of .957. 

Rangel is majoring in psychology. Starting in all 29 games she appeared in, the Pico Rivera, Calif. native finished the season hitting a .341 average and leading the team with an on-base percentage of .440. To cap it off, Rangel registered a slugging percentage of .353. In the field, the senior totaled an even 50 put outs and 50 assists for a fielding percentage of .917.

The Mammoths finished with an overall 17-19 this season, including a 7-11 record in NESCAC play. Their season performance earned them a spot in the NESCAC Quarterfinal, which they fell to top-seeded Tufts.
