Amherst 4x800m relay establishes new program record on second day of New England Division III Championships

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The 4x800m relay team of seniors Julia Schor and Sylvan Wold, sophomore Zoë Marcus, and junior Piper Lentz established a new program record as the Amherst College women's track and field team resumed competition at the New England Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday.

Amherst's record-breaking relay won the the New England title while the top eight finishers in each event earn All-New England honors. Despite not sending all qualifying members to the championships, the Mammoths placed sixth out of 39 teams tallying 43 points. Tufts won their program's first New England team title with 94 points. 

Amherst will resume competition next weekend split between the NEICAAA Outdoor Championships and the Farley Inter-Region Extravaganza on Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS: 

* Winning the event by over seven seconds and registering a time of 9:03.53, Schor, Wold, Marcus, and Lentz surpassed the school record of 9:09.87 that was set last weekend at the NESCAC Championship by senior Ava Zielinski, Marcus, Schor, and Lentz. This performance also establishes a new facility record for Coast Guard Academy's Nitchman Field and is a New England Division III Outdoor Championship record, beating the previous record of 9:07.24 set by Williams College in 2017. 

* Junior Arissa Grace McGowan placed eighth in the 100m hurdles, earning All-New England honors with a time of 15.15. 

* Lentz earned All-New England honors in the 400m, crossing the line in 58.52 and finishing sixth overall. 

* On the field, senior Anaya Thomas placed fifth in the triple jump recording a jump of 11.66m and earning All-New England honors. 

* Sophomore Leah Smith delivered a height of 1.56m in the high jump, earning All-New England accolades with a fifth-place finish. 

* In the discus, sophomore Emma Ramsingh produced a season best of 43.12m, placing fourth and earning All-New England honors.
