Game Recap: Field Hockey |

#5 Williams hand #11 Mammoths first loss of season

AMHERST, Mass. – A valiant defensive effort from junior Grace Puchalski came up short Saturday afternoon as the Amherst College field hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision against a hot-shooting Williams College roster at Hill Field.

Amherst's record dropped to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in NESCAC play while Williams improved to 3-1 on the season and 2-0 in the conference. The Mammoths will jump back on the road and head to Middlebury next, where they'll face the reigning national champions at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Peter Kohn Field.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

*The Mammoths started their first drive from their own half as junior Chloe Agopian dribbled through the midfield and found the curving run of sophomore Caroline Busler. The forward possessed into the final quarter and looked to connect with senior Molly Donegan in front of the goal, but the pass narrowly missed her stick.

*Taking advantage of a turnover in the fifth minute, senior Kiki Higgins drove down the left alley and sent a bouncing pass towards the left post. Junior Claire Colvin raced behind Amherst's defensive line and scooped the ball over Puchalski to make it 1-0 for Williams.

*Seven minutes into the second quarter, Puchalski ended a dangerous 1-on-1 breakaway from Williams, kicking the ball away to safety

*Puchalski continued to pressure the Ephs' offense in the second quarter, making a sliding challenge that regained possession for the Mammoths with just two minutes left in the frame

*After ten minutes of contested play, Williams extended their lead to 2-0 in the third quarter. Receiving the ball at the top of the arch, first-year Katie Sigrist sent an arching pass to the left post, where senior Pilar Torres tapped the ball into the cage.

*First-year Bella Kim kept Amherst's offense alive three minutes into the final quarter with a steal and a drive that took the forward into the arch, but the effort was ended by a strong challenge from Torres.

*Ten minutes later, as senior Chloe Bush was driving behind Amherst's defensive line for a one-on-one with Puchalski, the goaltender came up with another big save as she kicked the ball away from goal.

*Amherst's offense stayed active in the final two minutes as sophomore Emily Huehn took a touch inside the arch, then fired a powerful slap shot towards the left post, but the ball narrowly missed the iron.

BY THE NUMBERS:

*Williams held an offensive advantage, leading 8-5 in shots, 6-3 in shots on goal, and 6-5 in corners.

*Puchalski made 4 saves for Amherst while sophomore Ellie Smith notched 3 saves for the Ephs.
