#14 Mammoths See Win Streak Snapped by M.I.T., 7-2

CAMBRIDGE, MA — The #14 Amherst College men's squash team saw its 4-match win streak concluded on Friday night, falling 2–7 to #12 MIT at the MIT Engineers' home courts in Cambridge. Coming off an 18–0 weekend in which they swept both St. Lawrence and Wesleyan and secured the Little Three title, the Mammoths found themselves outmatched through the middle and lower ladder despite strong showings at the top on courts #2 and #3.

Amherst's record moves to 10–4 overall and 6–2 in NESCAC play as they turn their focus to their regular-season conference finale against Middlebury on Sunday, February 8th. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • First-year Devon Osborne delivered one of Amherst's two wins at #2 singles, earning a composed 3–1 victory over Ethan Chan (11–6, 11–9, 12–14, 11–8) in 46 minutes. After dropping a tight third game in extra points, Osborne responded with discipline and closed out the match to get Amherst on the board.  

  • Junior captain Joseph Toth added the Mammoths' other point at #3 singles, battling back after losing the first game to defeat John Gunton 3–1 (9–11, 11–5, 11–8, 11–6) in 52 minutes. For Toth, the win is impressive as his opponent Gunton has a rating of 6.19, and Toth has a rating of 6.17

UP NEXT:

Amherst returns to Davenport Squash Courts on Sunday, February 8, hosting Middlebury at 1:00 PM in their final NESCAC match of the regular season. The Mammoths will look to rebound quickly from Friday's setback and solidify their conference standing heading into postseason play, and the NESCAC tournament.
