Veteran coach Steve Rubin enters his eighth season as Head Coach of the Amherst men’s and women’s track & field teams and has guided the Mammoth programs to unprecedented success.

In 2024 Rubin’s teams set a new standard for NESCAC success with both teams reaching 2nd place at the 2024 NESCAC Championships--the highest finishes in history for both programs. At the New England Indoor Championships, both teams reached 3rd overall out of the 70-team field, also equaling the highest finishes in program history. At the annual “Little 3” Championship with Williams and Wesleyan, Amherst swept the Men’s and Women’s titles for the first time in program history.

The teams set 15 new school records during the 2024 campaign and Eliza Cardwell achieved double NCAA All-American Status in the 100h and long jump.

Rubin was honored as the 2024 Mideast Women’s Indoor Coach of the Year and the Amherst staff was named 2024 NESCAC Men’s Staff of the Year. In 2023 Rubin led both the women’s and men’s teams to match their highest-ever finishes in the NESCAC Championships. The Men’s team finished 3rd, equaling their finish under Rubin in 2019 and the women’s team finished 4th overall, their highest finish to that date--equaled only by the 2006 squad.

During the indoor season, the Men finished 3rd overall out of nearly 70 teams in the New England Indoor Championships, while the Women were 5th overall. Over the course of the season the two teams combined to set 8 new school records. In 2022 the Women’s team equaled their highest-ever finish at the New England Indoor Championships with a 3rd place overall while the men’s team finished 6th in the nearly-70 team field.

At the NESCAC Championship the women’s team moved up 6 spots from their previous year’s finish to claim 5th while the men were 4th overall. The 2022 season saw a total of 10 school records fall. Coach Rubin has expertise in a wide array of event disciplines and has guided Amherst athletes in the sprints, hurdles, jumps, multis and throws to 11 All-America finishes since his arrival. Overall, 45 school records have been broken in the 6 non-COVID seasons.

Prior to coming to Amherst, Rubin served as an Assistant Coach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 2012-2017, overseeing the sprints, hurdles and horizontal jumps groups. During that time UNC had unprecedented success in the men’s sprints, producing 10 All-Americans and 3 Olympic Trials qualifiers. From 2007 until 2012, Rubin was the Head Coach at Case Western Reserve University and was also the Director of Strength and Conditioning.

Rubin also completed stints as the Head Coach at Florida International University (2003-2007) and Washington University in St. Louis (2001-2003). He was also an Assistant Coach at the University of Miami from 1992-2001 where he specialized in jumps, throws and multi-events following one-year as an Assistant Coach at San Francisco City College (1991- 1992).
