Steve Talbot returned to Amherst in 2026 for his second stint with the Mammoths, working as an assistant coach with the sprint and hurdle events after holding the same position for the 2017-18 season.
Most recently, Talbot was an assistant coach at Hamilton College from 2023-26, where the Continentals saw historic growth in the sprint, hurdle, jump and relay events. In Talbot’s three seasons at Hamilton, he coached and/or recruited student-athletes who would combine for 22 school record performances in 11 different events, and over 200 performances on the program’s Top 10 lists.
Prior to his time at Hamilton, Talbot coached the sprints, hurdles, horizontal jumps, and relays at Millikin University from 2021-23. Talbot engineered a breakthrough ‘22-’23 season for the Big Blue men, whose runner-up finish at the 2023 CCIW Outdoor Championship meet was the program’s best in 60 years, scoring a program record 135.5 points. This milestone performance was led by 84 points from the sprint, hurdle, horizontal jump, and relay events, as the Millikin men swept the relay events, won the 110-meter hurdles, and placed two athletes in the top six of the 100m, 200m, 400m, 110H, and long jump. The Millikin coaching staff earned recognition as the CCIW Men’s Coaching Staff of the Year, and Talbot was named a USTFCCCA Midwest Region Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year finalist.
Talbot spent the 2018-19 season as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Oklahoma, working with the horizontal jumps and men’s sprints. The Sooner men’s 4x100-meter relay ended the year 7th on the Division 1 performance list, and 45th on the world list. The Sooners also boasted an elite horizontal jumps group, with three athletes earning All-America honors in the triple jump, and the collective group sitting atop the USTFCCCA Event Squad rankings in both the men’s and women’s triple jump.
During Talbot’s first stint with the Mammoths, the men’s 4x400-meter relay qualified for its first trip to the NCAA Indoor Championships in 7 years, placing 10th. Three Mammoths scored in the individual 400-meter dash at the 2018 NESCAC Championship meet.
A Western Massachusetts native, Talbot began his coaching career at nearby Westfield High School, Minnechaug Regional High School and his alma mater, Ludlow High School. Talbot coached athletes to over 40 school records, 8 individual sectional state championships, and 19 individual league championships in five years.
Talbot earned his M.S. in sport and performance psychology from Commonwealth University–Lock Haven in 2025, his B.A. in exercise science from Concordia University, St. Paul in 2018, and his A.A. in creative writing from Holyoke Community College in 2014. He earned his USTFCCCA Sprint/Hurdle/Relay Specialist certification in the summer of 2017.
