AMHERST, Mass. - Amherst College senior Co-captain Gretchen Bowe (Hampstead, NH) scored twice, and fellow Co-captain Mairin Brady (Bethesda, MD) and junior Robin Ackerman (Princeton, NJ) each tallied two assists, as the field hockey team remained perfect with a 4-0 shellacking of previously-unbeaten Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).
Amherst sophomore Abby Ouimet (Hatfield, MA), who netted the game-winner in the Jeffs' thrilling 2-1 victory over fifth-ranked Springfield College on Tuesday night, opened the scoring on Thursday, slapping a shot past WPI goalie Elizabeth Heneberry (Westwood, MA) just 6:20 into the contest. Jeff junior Marcy Busch (Scarsdale, NY) widened the Amherst lead to 2-0 with 14 minutes remaining in the half, converting an Ackerman feed from the weak side of the net, and then Bowe took over.
Bowe, named the NESCAC Player of the Week after notching goals in each of the Jeffs' first three games, converted an Ackerman feed with just over three minutes before the half, before capping the scoring 10 minutes into the second frame with her team-high fifth goal of the season. W.P.I. never seriously threatened the Amherst net, sending two shots on goal in the opening half, and none in the second.
For the game, the Jeffs (5-0) launched 19 shots on the WPI net, and Heneberry recorded 11 saves. The Jeffs are next in action on Saturday morning, when they host NESCAC rival Connecticut College.
