BRUNSWICK, Maine Bowdoin College sophomore Jackie Templeton (Middlebury, CT) slipped a shot past Amherst goalie Beth Sensing (Hockessin, DE) with 2:22 remaining in the first sudden-death overtime to give the Polar Bears a stunning 1-0 win over visiting Amherst College, the fourth-ranked team in the nation in the latest NFHCA poll.
After an even, back-and-forth 70 minutes of regulation in which each team posted seven shots on goal and earned six penalty corners, the game went to overtime, the first extra period for the Jeffs since their dramatic penalty-stroke win over Skidmore College in the 1999 NCAA Elite Eight.
The visitors had the better part of play during the first part of the first overtime, earning a pair of penalty corners against a weary Polar Bear defense, but neither materialized into a shot for the Jeffs. The Polar Bears countered, and after a corner late in the first extra period, Bowdoin sophomore Leah McClure (Rothesday, New Brunswick) slipped a pass to Templeton, who finished it for the game-winner.
The Jeffs, who could have set the all-time school record for most consecutive wins to open the season, fall to 7-1 with the loss, 3-1 in the NESCAC. Bowdoin, unranked in last week¹s NFHCA poll but likely to crack this week¹s top-20, improve to 7-1 (4-1 NESCAC) with their first over Amherst since the 1995 ECAC semifinals.
Next up for the Jeffs is a pair of back-to-back showdowns, including Wednesday afternoon¹s home date with Trinity College, and next Saturday¹s trip to Vermont to battle the 1998 NCAA Champion Middlebury College Panthers.
