MIDDLEBURY, VT - An Amherst College player scored an own-goal after Bowdoin College's David Bulow's shot hit the post just 34 seconds into the second overtime to lift Bowdoin to a 3-2 win over the Jeffs in the quarterfinals of the 2001 NESCAC Championship Tournament. The Polar Bears will take on Williams College next Saturday in Williamstown, while Middlebury College meets Tufts University in the other semifinal.
Amherst took a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in a 7:40 span early in the second half. Sophomore forward Tim Canon (Easthampton, MA) headed in a crossing pass from senior midfielder Casey Ryan (Guilford, CT) to put the Jeffs up 1-0 at the 53:05-mark, before junior defender Roger Boulay (Norfolk, MA) converted on a rebound shortly thereafter to stretch the advantage to 2-0.
Bowdoin responded when Thomas Bresnehan took a drop pass from David Bulow and rocketed a shot into the top corner of the net at 68:22. With just 4:25 remaining in regulation, Bowdoin tied the game as Chris Fuller finally found the back of the net after a pair of shots and a pair of saves by Amherst senior goalkeeper Bill Orum (Greenwich, CT).
Orum finished the game with five saves, while Travis Derr turned away six shots for Bowdoin. Amherst finished its season 7-6-2 overall, despite playing the majority of the season with a slew of injuries.
