AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College field hockey team's eight-game winning streak ended on Saturday as the No. 11 nationally-ranked Middlebury Panthers beat No. 6-ranked Amherst, 1-0. Middlebury improves its conference record to 6-0 and retains its lock atop the NESCAC standings, while Amherst falls to 4-2 in the conference (8-2 overall).
The lone goal came early in the second half when Char Glessner (Ipswich, MA) picked up a loose ball, cut left in front of the goal, and smashed a hard, low backhand inside the right corner of the net.
While Middlebury controlled the offensive flow most of the game, Amherst put some last-minute pressure on, including a good bid by junior forward Jenna Obelsky (Stoughton, MA). Beth Sensing (Hockessin, DE) made six saves for the Jeffs, who were missing three starters for the game, while Middlebury's Molly Fitzgerald (Louisville, KY) was relatively unchallenged with only two saves.
Amherst returns to action Thursday at 7 p.m. at non-league opponent Smith.
