AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College field hockey team scored three second half goals en route to a 4-1 win over Bates College on Saturday to even its record at 1-1 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.
Junior forward Abby Ouimet (Hatfield, MA) was the big story for Amherst as she scored the first two goals and assisted on the third. Her first score came with 22:43 remaining in the first half as she cut across the middle and blasted a shot between Bates' junior goalkeeper Lindsay's Gary's (Del Mar, CA) shin pads. Her second came with 25:15 left in the second as she poked in a crossing pass from senior tri-captain forward Marcy Busch (Scarsdale, NY) for a 2-0 Amherst lead.
Meanwhile, a combination of strong defense from senior tri-captain Anne Close (Limekiln, PA), and dominant midfield play from fellow tri-captain Mairin Brady (Bethesda, MD) kept the pressure on the Bates defense. With 14:17 remaining in the game, Amherst sophomore forward Allison Aldrich (Cornwall, VT) poked the ball in the net after a skirmish in front of the goal, with Ouimet getting the assist. Sophomore midfielder Christine Ryan (Summit, NJ) followed soon after with a penalty-stroke, which she calmly drained for a 4-0 Amherst advantage.
Bates' lone goal came just 16 seconds later from junior forward Johie Farrar (West Paris, ME), the only shot to find its way past Amherst senior goalie Beth Sensing (Hockessin, DE), who finished with three saves on the afternoon. Gary turned away nine shots for Bates (0-3/0-1).
Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. against visiting non-conference foe Springfield College.
