WORCESTER, MA - Senior tri-captain Marcy Busch (Scarsdale, NY) and junior forward Abigail Ouimet (Hatfield, MA) each connected twice in the first half to lead the Amherst College field hockey team to a school-record 10-0 shutout-win at non-league foe WPI Thursday night. The 10-goal output was the highest in school history. The Jeffs had scored seven goals in three previous games - most recently in 7-2 win over Western New England College in 1993.
Sophomore forward Christine Ryan (Summit, NJ) helped set the tone offensively, assisting on the first goal of the game and scoring the second off a feed from senior tri-captain midfielder Mairin Brady (Bethesda, MD). Busch opened the floodgates 4:02 into the game with the first of seven first half goals for Amherst. She also notched the Jeffs' fifth goal of the evening, while Ouimet tallied the game's fourth and sixth goals.
The Jeffs tacked on three more tallies in the second half despite emptying the bench after the break. Amherst outshot WPI 24-0 overall. Jeff goaltenders Beth Sensing (Hockessin, DE) and Katherine Cosentino (Greenwich, CT) combined for the shutout without making a save. Eight different Amherst players scored, as the Jeffs improved to 3-1 with their third consecutive win. Meanwhile, WPI fell to 0-5 with the loss.
Amherst returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. at NESCAC rival Connecticut College.
