Field Hockey Edges Colby, 1-0

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women's field hockey game rallied through inclement weather to notch a 1-0 win over visiting Colby College on Saturday. The stand marked the end of a brutal four-game losing skid, and also gave the Jeffs their first NESCAC win of the 2002 campaign. With the loss, the White Mules moved to 5-4 overall and 2-4 in conference play. The Jeffs, meanwhile, propelled their record to 4-6, with a 1-4 mark in the NESCAC. Now, Amherst faces a critical point in its schedule, with four conference matchups scheduled over the next three weeks to end the regular season.

The Jeffs came out running on all cylinders, mounting an offensive attack that simply overpowered the Colby defense. Senior forward Abby Ouimet (Hatfield, MA) registered a decisive goal off a rebound 12:43 into the first period to put the Jeffs on the board early. Ouimet's tally was all Amherst would need - Colby had trouble managing the strict Jeff defense, and would only muster four shots on the day. Amherst first-year goalkeeper Anne McMullin (St. Louis, MO) was stellar, turning away four shots. Meanwhile, Amherst took advantage of 19 penalty corners to put 19 shots on the board. Colby goalkeeper Carrie Morin (Augusta, ME) finished with six saves.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. at NESCAC and Little Three rival Wesleyan University.
