MEDFORD, MA - The 10th-ranked Amherst College men's soccer team used unassisted goals by sophomore Joe Gannon (Hanson, MA) and senior quad-captains Jeff Cantwell (Randolph, NJ) and Frank Perry (Hartford, CT) to blank host Tufts University 3-0 in both teams' NESCAC opener on Saturday. The Jeffs improved to 2-0 overall (1-0 NESCAC) and have yet to allow a goal on the season.
Gannon (Hanson, MA) opened the scoring early in the first half with a blast off a free-kick that sailed over the Tufts defensive wall and into the top right corner of the net.
Then, after 54 minutes of scoreless play, Cantwell netted a loose ball in front of the goal to put the visitors on top 2-0 in the 67th minute. After Tufts missed the net on a free kick on its ensuing possession, Perry broke away from the pack and netted the final tally of the contest at 78 minutes, setting the final score at 3-0.
Amherst sophomore goalkeeper Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA) needed only one save to record his seventh career shutout. Tufts junior keeper Scott Conroy (Madison, CT) tallied three saves in the losing effort.
Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. against visiting non-conference foe Wheaton College.
