Jeffs Drop Season-Opener at Trinity, 5-3

HARTFORD, CT - Despite a pair of goals by junior Katherine Skrivan (St. Louis, MO) and another from senior Erin Leydon (Bridgton, ME), the Amherst College field hockey team dropped its season- and conference-opener at NESCAC rival Trinity College, falling 5-3 on Saturday. Senior forward Jessica Baker (Middlebury, Conn.) and sophomore forward Erin Daly (Garden City, N.Y.) each scored twice for the host Bantams.

The two teams combined for all eight of the game's goals in an action-packed first half, including two by Trinity's Daly to match a pair of Amherst tallies by Skrivan in the first eight minutes. Baker gave Trinity the lead for good, 3-2, 13 minutes into the opening half with the first of her two goals, and senior forward Patricia Glennon (Holland, Mass.) added a goal from senior co-captain Ayres Heller (Bethesda, MD) with 6:22 left in the opening frame. Amherst pulled within one with 5:17 remaining in the half on a goal by Leydon, assisted by Skrivan, but Baker scored again to account for the final tally.

Junior goalkeeper Courtney Bergh (Pennington, N.J.) held the Lord Jeffs scoreless for the final 40 minutes and finished with four stops, while Glennon contributed one goals and one assist for Trinity. For the Jeffs, senior goalie K.C. Cosentino (Greenwich, Conn.) posted an impressive 10 saves in a losing effort, as Trinity outshot Amherst 23-9.

Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., hosting non-league foe Smith College.
