AMHERST, MA - Amherst senior tri-captain Katherine Skrivan (St. Louis, MO) blasted home a shot off a feed from sophomore Samantha Miller (Newton, MA) in the waning minutes of the second half to give the Amherst field hockey team a 1-0 season-opening victory over visiting NESCAC rival Trinity College in both teams' season- and conference opener on Saturday. Amherst sophomore Kathleen Boucher (Washington, DC) tallied five saves in goal and posted her first career shutout.
Neither side mustered much offense in the opening frame as Amherst fired only five shots, while Trinity managed to get only one shot on the cage. The Jeffs stepped up the offensive effort after the break, peppering Trinity senior goalie Courtney Bergh (Pennington, NJ)with eight shots, including Skrivan's game-winning rocket with just 3:18 left in regulation. The Amherst defense, led by junior Amy Watson (Norwood, MA), sophomore Lauren Benson (Hamilton, NJ) and rookie Catherine Calvert (Lawrenceville,NJ), was outstanding, surrendering just five shots and five penalty corners for the game. Bergh finished with 12 saves for the Bantams.
Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at non-conference foe Smith College.
