Amherst Plays to 1-1 Overtime Tie at Bates

Lewiston, ME - Amherst College played to a 1-1 overtime tie at Bates College in NESCAC men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon. Senior Joe Gannon (Hanson, MA) scored his first goal of the season to lead the Jeffs.

Amherst took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame as Gannon drilled a rebounded shot from first-year teammate Nick Lynch (Kingston, Jamaica) past Bobcat sophomore goalkeeper Aaron Schleicher (Londonderry, NH) and into the lower left corner of the net. The Jeffs held the lead for the remainder of the period, thanks to four first-half saves from senior goalkeeper Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA).

The Bobcats responded after the break with a goal from sophomore Duane Pelz (Boulder, CO) at the 66:09-mark. Pelz took a ball in space from classmate Brent Morin (Hanover, NH) and lofted it over Lockwood's head and just under the crossbar to knot the score. Neither team could muster a goal the rest of the way.

Lockwood finished with fives saves as the Jeffs moved to 2-0-1 (1-0-1 NESCAC), while Schleicher tallied four saves and Bates moved to 0-1-1 (0-1-1) NESCAC.

Amherst returns to action Monday at 4 p.m. against visiting non-conference foe MIT.
