MIDDLEBURY, VT - The Amherst College men's soccer side won it's ninth game of the season on Saturday afternoon, when they traveled to NESCAC rival Middlebury's campus for a 3-1 victory. The Jeffs rode the shoulders of senior co-captains Mike Wohl (Northampton, MA) and Rob Madden (Taft, CT) for the win, as both had a hand in the scoring.
Opening the scoring just four minutes into the game was Wohl, who converted on a Nick Lynch (Kingston, Jamaica) centering pass for the early 1-0 lead. Just 15 minutes later, on a long Madden throw-in winger Ryan O'Donnell (Belchertown, MA) flicked the ball, setting up a Jake Duker (Newton, MA) full volley.
Middlebury played hard on the day, and was able to bring the lead back to a single goal, when Andrew Germansky (New York, NY) headed home a Panther corner kick before halftime.
In the 74th minute, Ian Lovett (Newton, MA) was denied on a penalty, but the referee ruled that Middlebury keeper Zach Toth (Carlisle, MA) left his line too early. Duker was able to convert on the re-shoot, to seal the victory. Minutes later, the Panthers had a penalty of their own called, but Amherst goalie Moe Zeidan (Eden Prarie, MN) was up to the task, and made one of his two saves on the penalty shot.
Duker's pair of goals on the day gives him five for the week, helping lift the Jeffs to a pair of NESCAC wins.
Amherst returns to action this week when they take on WNEC on the road Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
