FROM A WESTERN NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE RELEASE
SPRINGFIELD, MA – Sophomore designated hitter Ralina Shaw (Tumwater, WA) posted a 2-for-3 outing, including a two-run homer, to lead the Amherst College softball team to a 6-3 win over non-conference rival Western New England College on Tuesday afternoon. Shaw also batted in four runs, while classmate Samantha Miller (Newton, MA) picked up her fourth win of the season in two innings of work.
Amherst got out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth as junior Caroline Polales (Winnetka, IL) slapped a two-out RBI single and Shaw slammed her fourth home run of the season. Springfield evened the score in the bottom of the fifth, but couldn't muster any offense for the remainder of the game. The Jeffs insured the win with three unearned runs late in the game off a dismal four errors by the Golden Bears.
Senior Rachel Hoerger (Oakland, CA) and rookie Holly Trace (Northport, AL) each added a pair of hits to move the Jeffs to 16-8 on the season.
Amherst returns to action on Saturday at noon, when they host Williams in a doubleheader.
