Amherst Ends Season with 3-1 Loss to Williams in NESCAC Quarterfinals

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - The fifth-seeded Amherst College field hockey team failed to upset host Williams College this afternoon in the first round of NESCAC playoffs, falling to the Ephs 3-1. The loss to Williams was the second in as many days for Amherst, and ends the Jeffs' season.

Williams forward Anne de Sanit Phalle scored the first goal of the game with 2:29 left in the first half, assisted by Meighan McGowan.

McGowan then scored off a penalty corner from Rebecca Gilbert with 10:24 left in the 2nd half. Cary Bearn scored with 6:45 left in the game, putting the Ephs up, 3-0.

Amherst junior Catherine Calvert (Lawrenceville, NJ) scored with 5:12 left in the game, bringing the final score to 3-1.

Bethany Baker played in goal for the Ephs and made two saves, while senior tri-captain Kathleen Boucher (Washington, DC) made six saves for the Jeffs. Williams had nine penalty corners to Amherst's six, and the Ephs out-shot the Jeffs, 11-6.

Williams advances in the tournament and will play at top-seeded Bowdoin College next Saturday at 11 a.m. Amherst falls to 8-7 to close out the season.
