MEDFORD, MA – Visiting Amherst College, ranked 11th in the country, scored twice in the second half and recorded its third consecutive shutout with a 2-0 NESCAC victory against Tufts University at Kraft Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Lord Jeffs improve to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference with the win. Tufts remained winless at 0-4-1 overall and 0-2-1 in NESCAC.
The teams played a scoreless first half, with Amherst gaining an 8-5 edge in shots and 5-0 on corner kicks. Tufts keeper David McKeon made five saves in the first 45 minutes.
The Lord Jeffs established momentum in the second half by scoring right out of the gate. Junior Jake Duker (Newton, MA) netted his third of the year with a blast from the six after a cross from the right side by senior tri-captain Ryan O'Donnell (Belchertown, MA) in the 47th minute.
Less than 15 minutes later, the Lord Jeff lead was 2-0 with O'Donnell capitalizing on a rebound off the left post after a shot by sophomore Rob Denious (Bloomfield Hills, MI). It was his second goal of the fall, coming in the 62nd minute.
Meanwhile, Amherst was limiting Tufts to just one shot in the second half. It was saved by junior keeper Jeff Grover (Framingham, MA), who totaled two saves on the day in recording the shutout. The Lord Jeffs haven't given up a goal since September 9 against Eastern Connecticut, and they've allowed just two in five games overall.
Dan Jozwiak and sophomore Dan Schoening put shots on goal for the Jumbos. McKeon finished with nine saves.
Amherst recorded a 21-6 margin in shots (13-1 in the second half), with senior tri-captain Taylor Downs (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) responsible for seven of them.
