From a Bowdoin College Release
BRUNSWICK, ME – The Bowdoin College men's soccer team snapped a three-game losing skid with an explosive attack, tallying a season-high four goals in a 4-2 win over Amherst College on Saturday. The Polar Bears improve to 2-3-0 (1-2-0 NESCAC) with the win while Amherst falls to 3-2-0 (1-2-0 NESCAC).
Amherst drew first blood, as senior Nick Lynch (Kingston, Jamaica) buried a goal from the left corner of the box at 19:44 to give the visitors a one-goal edge.
Bowdoin responded with three goals before halftime courtesy of three different scorers. Will Alden-Dunn lofted a well-placed effort over Amherst senior goalkeeper Jeff Grover (Framingham, MA) to deadlock the score at 22:47. Minutes later, first-year Eddie Jones blasted a shot off the crossbar that came to the foot of classmate Nick Powell, who notched his first collegiate goal to give Bowdoin the lead for good at 38:45.
With less than five minutes left before halftime, Jones played a perfect ball to Sean Bishop, who headed it into the net for his first collegiate goal and a 3-1 Polar Bear advantage.
Amherst trimmed the lead to a single goal with less than 20 minutes remaining when a header by senior tri-captain Jake Duker (Newton, MA) off a feed from Lynch made it 3-2.
Hugh Fleming responded for Bowdoin just over two minutes later, toeing a shot into the lower-left corner for the decisive tally.
Dan Hicks stopped six shots for the Polar Bears, who avenge a pair of 2007 losses to the Jeffs—including a season-ending loss in the NESCAC semifinals last fall. Grover made a pair of saves between the posts for Amherst.
The Lord Jeffs, who lost just their third conference game in the last two years, return to action Tuesday, Sept. 30 when they kick off a five-game home stand with a 7 p.m. game against Springfield College on Gooding Field.
