SPRINGFIELD, MA – The 19th-ranked Amherst College field hockey team scored two goals in each half and held a 42-3 advantage in shots during a 4-0 win over Springfield College Wednesday evening on Amos Alonzo Stagg Field.

The Lord Jeffs improve to 2-2 with their first win at Springfield since 2002, while the Pride fall to 2-3. Springfield defeated Amherst each year from 2004-08, but the Jeffs have now won two consecutive games in the series.

In the first half, the star of the show was Springfield junior goalkeeper Alison McCarthy, who held Amherst off the scoreboard for the first 28 minutes of the game. In the first half alone, the Jeffs out-shot the Pride by a 23-2 margin.

With 6:34 left in that first stanza, junior forward Chrissy Cantore (Hershey, PA) fired home an unassisted goal to give Amherst a 1-0 lead. Amherst scored again just one minute later, this time on a shot by senior midfielder Carly Leahy (Weston, MA). The assist on the second goal went to sophomore forward Kate McMahon (Denville, NJ), providing the Lord Jeffs with a 2-0 lead at the intermission.

McCarthy had made 17 saves by halftime. Her counterpart, sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Wise (Akron, OH), made two stops in the first 35 minutes.

Amherst applied every bit as much pressure in the second half, scoring first at the 45:13 mark. The Jeffs' third goal of the evening came from senior forward Liz Schink (Chicago, IL), with the assist going to Cantore. Just over two minutes later, at 47:37, Schink tallied the fourth and final goal on an assist from first-year midfielder Alex Philie (East Sandwich, MA).

McCarthy finished with 27 saves in 56 minutes. Backup sophomore goalkeeper Anna Calano made three saves and did not allow a goal in the final 14 minutes. For Amherst, Wise made three saves.

The Lord Jeffs will return to action Saturday, Sept. 25, when they host Connecticut College (4-0, 2-0 NESCAC) on Gooding Field at noon.
