Jeffs Fall Short to No. 11 Trinity, 2-1

Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. – Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Horwitz recorded 14 saves but the seventh-ranked Amherst College field hockey team was edged by No. 11 Trinity College at home Wednesday night, 2-1.

The loss snapped a 10-game winning streak for the Jeffs who fall to 12-3 overall and 7-3 in the NESCAC, while earning the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament. With the win, Trinity claimed the No. 3 seed with the same record (12-3, 7-3 NESCAC).

Trinity controlled the tempo for much of the first half and out shot Amherst, 5-1.  After 16 minutes of scoreless action, the Bantams jumped on the board first when Nikki Rivera '16 sent one through the legs of Horwitz.

Both defenses held strong the rest of the period as Horwitz made three terrific saves to keep the margin at one heading into halftime.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Trinity had a great opportunity to score with Horwitz on the ground, but the sophomore goalkeeper disrupted the play as Amherst regained possession. Roughly nine minutes later, the Jeffs evened the score after a series of shots on net. Annika Nygren '16 received a penalty corner pass from Mary Grace Cronin '18 and sent one to the back of the net at the 44:01 mark. The team's point leader now has 11 goals and 10 assists on the season.

However, just over five minutes later, Trinity regained a lead when Elizabeth Caporale found Sophie Doering on a penalty corner. Doering sent the shot to the back left corner of the goal to give the Bantams a 2-1 advantage.

Amherst had a couple great opportunities to knot the game at two apiece. With 14:40 remaining in regulation, Katie Paolano'16 came inches away from the game-tying score when her shot hit the right post. The Jeffs also had a chance in the closing seconds as a series of passes brought them from the midfield down near the circle, but were unable to get a clear shot at net as the time ran out.

Trinity held an 18-13 edge in shots and 14-7 advantage in penalty corners. Horwitz made 14 saves in the losing effort, her first loss of the year (10-1). Sophie Fitzpatrick played all 70 minutes between the posts for the Bantams and recorded 10 saves.

Amherst claimed the No. 4 seed in the NESCAC Championship and will host No. 5 Tufts on Gooding Field in quarterfinal action Saturday, Nov. 1. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
