Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College scored three times in the first half and had four different players score in the game to help seal a 4-3 victory over Trinity College in Wednesday afternoon's NESCAC men's soccer game at Hitchcock Field.

With the win, Amherst concludes its regular season 11-1-3 overall, 7-1-2 in NESCAC action and have clinched the second seed in the NESCAC tournament and will host a quarterfinal round game on Saturday, Nov. 1. Time is yet to be determined. Trinity moves to 7-6-2 overall, 2-6-2 in league play.

After early pressure from Trinity in the opening minutes of the game, Amherst flipped the script and took control of the game. Eleven minutes into the contest, Nico Pascual-Leone sent a cross into the six-yard box to Gabriel Wirz '15 who headed the ball directly on target but Trinity goalkeeper Jason Katz was there with a diving save. The ball fell to the feet of Christopher Martin '17 who ripped a shot back on goal, but the ball sailed wide.

Less than five minutes later, the Jeffs broke through when Wirz fired a shot that Katz saved, but the rebound fell to Pascual-Leone who lifted the ensuing shot high above the keeper's outstretched arms to give Amherst a 1-0 lead.

Ten minutes later, the Bantams leveled the match at 1-1 through Tim Shea's shot inside the right post.

At the 33:27 mark, the Purple & White regained its one-goal cushion when Martin redirected a Wirz shot attempt and delivered a tough-angle score under the crossbar to give the Jeffs a 2-1 advantage. Thre minutes later, Martin crossed the ball into the box from the left side of the 18-yard box to Andrew Orozco '17 who headed into the back of the net to increase the Amherst lead to 3-1 before intermission.

In the 50th minute, Orozco found Greg Singer '16 with a pass at the top of the 18-yard box. Singer turned and fired a shot high over the goalkeeper's hands and into the nylon to push the Amherst lead to 4-1.

Trinity pulled one back at the 64:33 mark when Tobias Gimand headed a service from Mike Cooke into the bottom left corner to narrow the Bantam's deficit to 4-2.

With time running out in the second half, Gimand struck again with a goal in the far right corner following a pass from Alex Bednarek to set the final score at 4-3.

Amherst outshot Trinity, 14-9 in the contest, while the Bantams held a 10-9 edge in corners. Katz made seven saves for Trinity, while Thomas Bull '16 made two stops for the Purple & White.
