Tank Leads No. 8 Amherst Past Hamilton, 5-2

Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. – A three-goal game by Madeline Tank '15 lifted the eighth-ranked Amherst College field hockey team to a 5-2 win over Hamilton College Saturday at Gooding Field.

The win marks the sixth straight for the Jeffs as they move to 8-2 on the season and 5-2 in conference play, while the Continentals move to 5-4 on the year and 2-3 in league action.

With neither team able to gain immediate momentum, an Amherst timeout 20 minutes into the game proved beneficial as both teams came out of the time out with rejuvenated energy. Eva Rosencrans  broke the scoreless tie with her 13th goal of the season as she collected her own rebound and blasted a shot past Amherst goaltender Emily Horwitz '17 with 16:03 left in the first half.

Amherst, who outshot Hamilton 6-1 in the first half, wasted no time to strike back as Madeline Tank '15 tipped in a hard shot from the top of the circle from Elizabeth Turnbull '18. Continuing their offensive effort, the Purple and White nearly scored once again at the 7:13 mark but the Amherst shot was met with an incredible defensive save by the Continental's Sam Sherman.

Taking advantage of the Jeffs second corner of the game, Tank '15 scored her second of the game and 11th of season as a pass from Sydney Watts '17 met the stick of Tank who tipped the ball passed Hamilton goaltender Victoria Trentini.

Amherst began the second half where they left off as Ellie Andersen '15 was able to place her stick on a high bouncing ball that ultimately found its way behind the Hamilton goaltender.  Capping off her six-point game, Tank scored once again with 10 minutes remaining off a pass from Turnbull that found its way to Tank on the left side of the circle.

Proving to be Hamilton's final offensive scare of the game, Rosencrans scored her second of the game with a low hard shot with 14:20 left in the second half, as a pass from Aubrey Coon found her stick in the middle of the circle.

Annika Nygren '16 tallied a final insurance goal for the Jeffs with under a minute to play as Anderson made a pass to Nygren who beat the goalie backdoor.

The Jeffs held a decisive 21-to-5 advantage in shots and 8-to-2 advantage in corners.

Amherst returns to conference play on Saturday, October 11th when they host Colby College at Gooding Field.
