CLERMONT, Fla. – Trailing by two entering the seventh inning, the Amherst College softball team rallied to defeat Wisconsin-Whitewater, 3-2, in the second game of doubleheader following a 10-5 win over SUNY Plattsburgh in game one.
The Jeffs (9-2) went 7-2 during their spring break trip in Florida and handed the Warhawks (3-1) their first loss of the season while dropping Plattsburgh to 2-8.
In the first game of the double-dip, Amherst used a four-run first inning to take an early lead before adding on four more in the top of the seventh. Plattsburgh retaliated with four of their own in the bottom half of the inning but the lead was too large to overcome.
Seven Jeffs recorded multiple-hit games and everyone in the lineup recorded as hit as the team totaled 16 with 10 RBI. In the second game of the twinbill, Wisconsin-Whitewater scored the first run of the contest in the top of the fourth and added another score in the top of the seventh to take a 2-0 lead.
Trailing by two with three outs remaining, Cook got things started with a double to center field. Miller singled to right on the next at bat and reached second on a Warhawk error, while Cook crossed home plate. Marovitz walked and Annie Apffel '17 advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Caroline Sealander '15 stepped to the plate with one out and hit a walk-off single to center field, driving in Marovitz and Miller for the win.
Seven different Jeffs recorded a hit to give Amherst seven total for the gam, while Wisconsin-Whitewater held an edge with eight.
Jackie Buecher '17 continued her impressive spring break trip to begin her first-year campaign. She threw a complete game, two run (one earned) performance on eight hits and one strikeout.
